Synopsis

Widely acclaimed and known as a cult classic among audiences from Southeast Asia, Rajkumar Hirani’s film sees three students entering an Indian Imperial College of Engineering. Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi meet Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad (Rancho).

While everyone is studying till late at night, the talented Rancho enjoys life, learns effortlessly and gets the highest grades. The students bow suffer in a rigid educational environment, embodied in the stern figure of Dr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe ("Virus").

Meanwhile, they all carry a burden: Farhan is from a humble social background and feels pressured to bring home an engineering degree. Raju is more passionate about photography than engineering but does not dare talk to his father. Rancho does not have any family.

With a light-hearted approach, the film nevertheless touches on issues such as accessibility to tertiary education, reputation of engineering schools and prestige of the engineering profession in India.
