About the Festival

This year, our thematic focus lies on renewable energies. Under the title The Currents of Change, we plan to screen one or two films each month from August to October and discuss them with invited guests.

To kick things off, we have invited Swiss director Claudio von Planta, because he has made such fantastic films on this topic that are perfect for inspiring even climate cynics! He lives in London and has worked extensively with the BBC—among other things, he filmed The Long Way Round series with Ewan McGregor. In his work, he passionately dedicates himself to technology and the possibilities of renewable energy, often packaging the subject matter as adventure travels across the globe.

In his latest documentary, Chasing the Peak (2025), Claudio follows three Swiss engineers and their project to build a solar-powered truck called Terren and drive it up a volcano in the Andes. La Croisière Verte/Chasing Mobility is a TV series detailing a 17,000 km journey of four solar-powered e-cars from Morocco to South Africa. This is currently in post-production.

Claudio will be in Melbourne from 17 to 21 August. If you want to see the events we have planned, scroll down to our programme.

Festival Programme

  • Opening of the 2026 FEIT Film Festival with Chasing the Peak

In addition to Claudio von Planta, expect the Melbourne Racing Car Team. We have invited three engineers from the Swiss team who will share their insights and answer technical questions in a hybrid discussion after the film.

Where: University of Melbourne, Parkville Campus, Old Arts, McMahon Ball Theatre.

  • The Green Lens: How Can Filmmakers Engage Communities for the Energy Transition?

As the world shifts toward sustainable energy, filmmakers hold a unique power to bridge the gap between technical developments and local communities. In this installment of our FEIT film series, we welcome Swiss director and cameraman Claudio von Planta (known for his work with Ewan McGregor on the Long Way Round series) to discuss these complexities.

Claudio will give a presentation on highlights from his 35-year career filming energy projects and visionaries in over 100 countries. Using photos and film clips, he will share first-hand experiences from these regions and introduce his latest filmmaking venture.

A central part of the event is an interactive audience Q&A. The discussion will focus directly on the core question of the evening: How can filmmaking be used to engage communities and navigate the challenges of driving the energy transition?

Where: University of Melbourne, Parkville Campus, Arts West Building, Forum Theatre.
